Exactly how ugly Ugly Baby is, is hard to tell.
Under the auspices of head chef Michael Antonievich, the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired creations of Ugly Baby are intended to be shared with fond friends, and paired with cocktails of character.
On the second floor of the multi-storey precinct in Yagan Square, upstairs from Pink Taquito (“Tacos. Tequila. Trouble”) Ugly Baby has earned its place in Perth’s late-night culture by being open way past normal bedtime from Wednesdays to Sundays.
Communal tables are part of the distinctive, bold personality it was born with.
Its chubby hands hold bold flavours in a venue that’s generally crowded and loud, so be warned. If a noisy baby is not your thing, don’t pretend that it is and complain about it later.
That’s just plain ugly.
Ugly Baby is part of the Stories family. A multiple award-winning showcase of diverse offerings across five floors: nine bars, the city’s biggest beer garden, three restaurants, a pop-up taco bar, a speakeasy and rooftop bar, and a private dining space.
With a menu that’s halal certified and vegan-abundant, small share plates range from $9-11, starting with wood-fired flatbread. Hummus, Burnt Eggplant Dip, Date Tahini and Whipped Delizia Ricotta are some of the delicious accompaniments.
Ugly Baby’s signature daily Feed Me tasting menu is a fabulous feast. For a minimum of two people at $76 a head, it includes its signature dessert.
Large shares include a tangine special, and priced between $29-60. Crispy Baby Snapper comes with a green tahini sauce and herb and sprout salad; the Mixed Shish Plate is indeed mixed, with chicken, beef and lamb. The Harissa Roasted Carrot is a taste explosion emphasised by walnut granola, coconut yoghurt labneh and rose water. There are plenty of sides, from skin-on chips coated in oregano, smoked paprika salt and parmesan to Crispy Patatas with crème fraiche, honey and chilli oil to Snow Peas and Green Bean Salad.
Every Saturday, Baby Goes Bottomless for two hours. A free-flowing brunch of share plates and bubbles ($79 pp) or cocktails (add $10) is in such high demand, bookings are essential. For the table comes all the offerings of the small share plates, then a choice of five dishes. These include Wood Roasted Cauliflower, Shawarma Spice Lamb Shoulder Ragu and Charcoal Chicken. If you can fit dessert, it’ll be a Baklava Pistachio Ice Cream Sandwich with Sweet Dukka.
Ugly Baby is about to turn two—which could be terrible, if it wasn’t so fabulously ugly already.
