Cafe Freeariello in Fremantle

We asked our “vegan scout’s vegan scout” Ares Chaplin which cafes he recommends as the “best in the West” when it comes to vegan, vegetarian or just plain whole food vibrating healthily – here’s his advocations, in no particular order …

Mother in Fremantle

Mother is a plant-based natural food and wine restaurant based in Fremantle. Formerly ‘The Raw Kitchen’ their journey started in 2009 with a simple mission: to inspire and support healthy, sustainable living.

Mother uses real, natural, nutrient-rich ingredients to create flavour-packed food. They celebrate incredible, progressive cuisine, with food to be enjoyed, fuel our bodies, feed the soul and pay respect to Mother Earth.

Everything they serve is free from refined, processed or artificial ingredients and almost all made from scratch on their site, including their dairy-free cheeses, butter, yoghurts, ferments, pickles and sauces.

They choose to use only healthy oils, alternative unrefined sweeteners and their own plant based, house-made “dairy”.

Annalakshmi On Swan in Perth

“Annalakshmi was founded in Perth in 1991 by his holiness, Swami Shatanand Saraswathi (Swamiji) based on the concept ‘Athiti Devo Bhava’ – Guest is God, In ancient India, there is a tradition that as a householder before having your meal, you should first entertain an unknown guest that comes to your home. It is believed that God comes in the form of your guest, and that it should be your duty to entertain and feed your guest to the best of your ability to their satisfaction. This concept is called ‘Athiti Devo Bhava’ – Guest is God. At Annalakshmi we strive to follow this great tradition.

Food nurtures; Food is life sustaining – everyone needs to eat to survive. No one should be deprived of a wholesome meal. Food is the only thing in this world where as a consumer, one would say ‘no more thank you” due to being fully satisfied. At Annalakshmi, we wish to give our guests this satisfaction.

In Hinduism, the greatest deed one can do is provide food – this is called “Annadhannam Mahadhannam”. At Annalakshmi besides serving food to all those who dine with us, we also give our guests the opportunity to provide for others as well. Food is meant for sustenance of life and nobody should be deprived of it.

Annalakshmi is a place that supports the act of giving, from the heart. At Annalakshmi the food is cooked with selfless love and positive energy. This food when consumed, becomes a healing nectar and food for the soul.

When guests dine at Annalakshmi, their contribution not only pays for their own meals but through their generosity, it pays towards individuals who are less fortunate. Music and dance is food for the soul. Dining at Annalakshmi is a cultural experience and through Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya (our educational organisation) and Lavanya Arts (our handicrafts and visual arts organisation, we wish to share Indian culture and the arts with you and the community.”

Ten Acre Block in the Pan Pacific Hotel, Perth City

Renowned for its innovative, expertly curated and deliciously fresh dishes, Australia’s incipient high-end plant based restaurant Ten Acre Block challenges perceptions of vegan cuisine. Named after the 10-acre plots of land that were owned by farmers and growers in rural Perth back in the 1960s and 70s, Ten Acre Block’s dishes feature a range of different spices, forms and flavours to celebrate the various cultures and backgrounds of the growers that worked the land.

They are proud supporters of the Western Australian agricultural industry and their menu tells the story of local produce and family connections, while conveying the importance of sustainability through a zero-waste philosophy.

In sync with WA’s farmers and acutely attuned to the seasons, Ten Acre Block’s talented team of chefs lead by consulting Executive Chef Alejandro Saravia study the textures, colours, skins and scents of every ingredient and pair traditional cooking styles with modern methods to ensure every component is celebrated.

The team craft unique, out-of-the-box dishes that ensures that even non-vegans can enjoy the delectable nature of local produce.

Challenge your own perceptions on plant based dining with TAB’s seasonal à la carte menu available Friday and Saturday.
