Inarguably, Perth folks’ favourite Australian city, other than our home metropolis, is wonderful, urbane, cultured, cafe-centric Melbourne. So here’s some hot coffee on a very cool cafe we look forward to visiting again on our next visit to the grand poobah of all things religiously AFL.
Ponyfish Island is a floating bar on the Yarra River anchored under the Southbank pedestrian bridge. Head down the stairs to find fresh Asian-inspired cuisine, crafty cocktails and local wine and beer.
Following a redesign, Ponyfish Island now features terrazzo-topped tables, comfy lounge areas and custom sunshades, with a colour palette that brightens up the once semi-rustic space.
The island takes its name from the elusive Ponyfish, a mysterious creature seen swimming in the Yarra River. There is much debate as to whether the Ponyfish actually exists or if the creature is simply a fabrication created by those who want to believe.
After a renovation in late 2020, the bar can now host up to 150 people in the space. We suggest getting a draught beer or a cocktail and parking yourself beside the water as it’s a prime people-watching location. Just be careful you don’t get caught in the after-work crowd who notoriously flock there after five.

Head to Melbourne’s famous under-bridge bar for some great people watching
Take a stroll over the Evan Walker pedestrian footbridge that runs from Flinders Street Station to Southbank and you’ll notice something happening underfoot. No, it’s not the tourist boats zooming down the Yarra River. It’s Ponyfish Island, a riverside bar that’s latched underneath the busy thoroughfare.
Descend via the staircase on the footbridge and you’ll be acquainted with Ponyfish’s aquatically inspired pontoon bar. Watch the sunset over the city as you nibble on snacks from its Asian-inspired, all-day menu that features pork dumplings and satay chicken steamed buns.
Unique venue on a river island offering cocktails & seasonal bar snacks along with scenic views.
